A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, January 24th at Trinity United Methodist Church, 590 Elma Ave SE, in Salem, OR 97317 for Virgil Elizabeth Myers, who died January 12th at age 90.
Virgil Elizabeth Olson was born October 21, 1918 in Superior, Wisconsin. She graduated from High School in Aitkin, Minnesota, where her family operated a dairy farm. She subsequently graduated from Normal School. The family moved to Bandon, Oregon in 1936. Virgil found employment as a housekeeper in Portland working for the owners of the Aladdin Theater. She was married to John Tom Myers, Jr. on July 7th 1940 in Oregon City, Oregon. John was on active duty in the US Army from 1939 until his retirement in 1967. Virgil accompanied him and raised her three children in Camp White, Oregon; Bremerton, Washington; Richmond, California; Ilvisheim am Neckar, Germany; Presidio of San Francisco, California; Tokyo, Japan; College Park, Maryland; Frankfurt am Main, Germany and Ft. Lewis, Washington. In 1967 John and Virgil retired to a house in Clackamas County east of Oregon City. In Oregon City Virgil was very active in the First United Methodist Church, particularly focusing on the commodity foods program. In 1991 John and Virgil moved to Salem, where she was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church. Her involvement and commitment to the commodity food program continued there. In 1998 she was named volunteer of the year by Marion-Polk Food Share. She was preceded in death by her husband John, grand daughter Piper Joy Newell and brother, Arthur E. Olson.
Survivors include her brother, Adrian Olson and sister Audrey Jolly; children John III and Pamella Doerksen of Corvallis, Oregon and Cece Newell of Salem, Oregon; grandchildren, Teri Doerksen and Jackie Chester, Danika and Regan Myers, Megan Newell-Ching, Tucker and Tessa Newell; and great-grandchildren Hannah, Matthias and Amy.
