In loving memory

VIOLA M. ANDERSON
August 18, 1911 - January 24, 2010

Viola Anderson, wife of the late Captain Philip Anderson, passed away peacefully on January 24, 2010 in Salem, Oregon. A special thanks for the loving care given by the staff at Meadow Creek Village and Hospice Care of the Northwest. Viola was born in Poland and she came to the United States in 1916 with her parents and sisters. The family settled in Philadelphia, PA. Viola met her then to be husband, a professional soldier, in 1932 and they were married in 1933. They raised two sons, Philip and Eugene. While her husband was overseas in WWII she devoted her time to caring for her children and working in the war effort making parachutes. They lived in St. Louis, MO and Oakland, CA before moving to Salem in 1967. After her husband’s death in 1981, she lived in her home with the help of her nearby family until the age of 97. The war years of separation allowed her to be confident in her own independence. She crocheted magnificent award winning tablecloths and afghans. She loved to tend her beautiful flower garden. Viola shared her Polish cooking with friends and family. The focus of Viola’s life was her children and extended family. She touched the lives of many, especially her nephews and nieces who were to her the daughters she never had. All were special to her.
Viola was always thankful for her life in America. She was a devout Catholic and always charitable and caring to those less fortunate.
Viola will remain forever in the hearts of her surviving family – her sons, Philip (Veneranda) and Eugene (Barbara), her many grandchildren, nieces and nephews, great grandchildren and extended family.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Queen of Peace Church. Services will be at 11:00AM on Thursday, January 28, 2010 at Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Lone Oak and Friendship. Private interment will be at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Arrangements by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
