In loving memory

Robert John Schackel
May 20, 1933 - November 19, 2009

Bob (Robert John) Schackel was born May 20, 1933 to John F. Schackel his wife Louise V. nee Heintz in Worthington, Minnesota.

Following the death of Bob’s mother in 1937, the Schackel family moved to Tacoma, Washington in 1942. Bob attended Concordia Lutheran School in Tacoma. He then attended Concordia Academy in Portland, Oregon during his high school years followed by two years at Concordia Junior College. He completed his education at Pacific Lutheran in Parkland, Washington, graduating in 1955.

Bob then served in the US Army, being honorably discharged in 1957. For much of his military service, he was stationed in Europe. Following military service, he worked for St. Regis Paper Company in Tacoma.

Bob worked for the same company in New York, Montana, and Mississippi. His longest place of employment was Klickitat, Washington, where he worked for 25 years. Throughout his life,
Bob enjoyed participating in the annual events of his extended family.

In August 23, 1975, Bob married Mary Sample. This union was blessed with the birth of Keith Robert in 1977. Mary died September 2, 1982.

Bob retired from Champion in 1995 and moved to Puyallup, Washington. Here he suffered a stroke which resulted in paralysis of his right side. Though handicapped, Bob lived by himself in Salem from 1997 until the time of his death.

Before his stoke, Bob was an active bowler, golfer and skier. He was a lifetime member of the Lutheran Church. While in Klickitat, he served Grace Lutheran Church as treasurer for twenty five years. In Salem, he regularly attended St. Mark Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his son Keith Robert of Seattle and his brother and sister-in-law Jim and Audrey of Salem, Oregon. He is also survived by Lois Jaech of Tacoma and Dolores Fuerstenau of Battleground, who were like sisters to Bob. Step children Lynn Austin and David Sample also survive.
