Longtime resident of Salem Phyllis Martell passed away peacefully on Monday July 13.
She was born on October 1, 1922 in Peever, South Dakota to Edwin and Louise (Erickson) Eide. After spending her childhood in Peever, she moved to Portland, Oregon in the early 1940’s. There, she met Philip J. Martell after his return from Navy service in WWII and they were married on June 29, 1946 in Portland. Philip was a Telegrapher for the Spokane, Portland, and Seattle Railroad and his career took them to Saint Helens, Seaside, Bingen, WA, and finally to Salem in February of 1960.
Over the years Phyllis worked as a bookkeeper for the City of Salem Water Dept., Rod’s Auto Parts, Illahe Hills Country Club, and The Santiam Girl Scout Council. In her retirement years she worked for Croissant and Company and has always enjoyed cooking. She also enjoyed playing Bridge, Bingo and Golf.
She is survived by daughter Nancie Hollin, and son Craig of Salem, three grandchildren and three great grandchildren, brothers Ray Eide of Hillsboro, Donald Eide of Kenai, Alaska and sister Virginia Millerup of Aloha and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband Philip who passed away in December of 1993 and brother Marlin (Bud) Eide and sisters, Lois Ridgway, Ruth Fredrich, and Elda Brewer.
At the request of the deceased there will be a family graveside service at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Arrangements are by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
