Mark Evans Hegstrom was born October 5, 1957, in Evanston, Illinois, the fifth of five sons of Natalie and Leo Hegstrom. The family moved to Oregon in 1959 and Mark was a part of the establishment of the Hegstrom Homestead.
Mark worked as a carpenter millwright most of his life and spent the last several years as caretaker of the homestead. Mark loved working with his hands and created many beautiful handcrafted woodworking pieces. He loved animals and was an excellent gardener, taking delight in the entire outdoors. Mark was an avid OSU Beavers fan with a deep dislike for the “Ducks.”
Mark was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church in Salem. He was a Board Member of Howell Prairie Cemetery and also volunteered for Habitat for Humanity.
Survivors include: his son, Evan Hamby; mother, Natalie Hegstrom of Salem; brothers, Paul and his wife, Karlene of Salem, Jon and his wife, Ann of Issaquah, Washington and David of Salem; two nephews and one niece. He was preceded in death by his father, Leo and brother, Theodore.
Mark was a loving son and brother and a devoted friend to many. He will be deeply missed.
A memorial service will be at 11:00AM on Wednesday, July 29, 2009 at Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service. Contributions may be made in his name to Habitat for Humanity.
