Madelyn Jane Alexander was March 6, 1920 in Stockton, Ca., daughter of A.N. and E. Marie Beals. She attended schools in Peoria, Ill., and Klamath Falls, Or., and graduated from Klamath Union High School in l938. She received her teaching degree from Southern Oregon College of Education in l940, a bachelor of Science degree from University of Oregon in l944, and acquired two years of graduate school. She holds one of the few remaining life certificates to teach in Oregon. She taught school in Chemult, Grants Pass, Wasco, Portland, The Dalles and Chenowith for about 26 years. She had also worked as a caseworker for the State Public Welfare Commission in Portland and Wasco County for 3 years.
She married Leonard Alexander on May 31, 1947 in Klamath Falls. He passed away in 1979. After living in The Dalles for 35 years, Madelyn moved to Salem in August of 1981. Survivors include her daughter, Susan M and son, Stephen B. She also leaves behind two grandchildren, Katie M. and Kyle S.
Madelyn was a charter member of The Dalles Gateway Presbyterian Church, a Past President of The Dalles branch of American Association of University Women, and a member of the Salem Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She volunteered with The Talking Books for the Blind, the State Library and The Battlecreek Homeowners Association where she was a former board and finance committee member. Madelyn enjoyed stitchery, word puzzles, reading and Oregon history.
