Ella Loraine Macklin was born in Mt. Hood, Oregon on October 10, 1923 to parents Scott and Hazel (Onion) Macklin. She joined sister, Louise (Schweigart) and brother, Lawrence. When she was six months old the family moved to Salem where she continued to reside until her death.
Loraine graduated from Salem High School in 1941 and then attended Merritt Davis Business School. Upon graduation she began working at the State of Oregon, Department of Education for Rex Putnam.
In 1945 she met C. Forrest Smith when he returned from WWII and in September 1947 they were married. They celebrated 52 years of marriage before his death on her birthday in 1999. They had two children, Karen and Forrest. After the children began school she returned to work as bookkeeper and office manager for Ted Kightlinger at D & L Oil Supply until retiring in 1988.
Beloved father, husband, and friend to many. Died at Samaritan Albany General Hospital. He was born in Falls City, Oregon, the son of Mary and Thomas Dunlop. He graduated from Dearborn High School in Deerfield, Chicago after the family moved there in 1948.
He is survived by his wife Irene, son Jim, and daughter Jessica, three grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and two foster grandchildren, his brother Martin, sisters Catherine and Sarah.
