Leslie A. Giedd was born on May 23rd, 1933 in Avon, South Dakota. He was the eldest child of Arthur and Jennie Johnson Giedd.
After proudly serving his country in the USAF, Les earned his teaching degree from Southern State Teachers College in Springfield, South Dakota in 1958. He taught Business Education and Typing in public high schools in South Dakota, Iowa and Oregon. He also coached junior high and high school basketball and softball. He was later employed with the Bureau of Indian Affairs where he taught at Chemawa High School, north of Salem. His career with the BIA also included a brief teaching stint with the Job Corps in Minnesota. During the latter years of his teaching profession, Les operated his own printing business, which was like a hobby that he really enjoyed.
Leslie married Phyllis Roth in 1954 in Minnesota. From this union, two children were born; Mark Giedd or Harper, Kansas and Karla Caputo of Aumsville, Oregon.
Leslie passed away on October 10, 2009 in Salem. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Dennis Giedd. He is survived by his children and five siblings; Doris Paul of Hawaii, Arlis Johnson of Illinois, Gail Erickson or North Carolina, Jerry Giedd of Montana, and Tracy Johnson of Illinois. Additionally, he leaves three grandchildren, Katie, Emily and Hanni Rebo.
Memorial Services will be held at Christ the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church at 4440 State St. SE, Salem on Thursday, October 15th at 1:00 PM. Private graveside services will be held at Willamette National Cemetery. Arrangements are by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
