Salem- Jeanette Lois Graber Dukes, 89, was born April 23, 1921 and left this earth surrounded by her family on August 19, 2010.
Jeanette was born in Salem to Abel and Mabel (Zeh) Graber. She graduated from Salem High School in 1939 and from Willamette University with a degree in teaching, then from the University of Washington with a degree in library sciences. She taught high school in Waldport, Oregon.
She moved to Tacoma, Washington, where she worked as a librarian at Fort Lewis. She met and later married Lamar H. Dukes, a U.S. Air Force sergeant, on her birthday in 1950 and in the years proceeding had four sons. After their time in Washington they then transferred to New York State.
She returned to Salembecoming employed at theSalemPublic Library.Jeanette filled many positions and has worked with three library directors. She began work at the oldlibrary and later helped with the move to the present location.She served as head of the Circulation Division for many years andalso worked at the Reference Desk. She officially retired in 1984 but was soon back on the job as asubstitute reference librarian.
Jeanette was truly a world traveler. Among her favorite trips were Africa, Russia, China, Spain, Switzerland, Peru, Australia, Fiji and many other places throughout the world. She also enjoyed spending time at her beach house on the central Oregon coast.
For the last four years Jeanette has been an active member of the Mt. Angel Towers community where she was instrumental in enhancing the library program.
She is survived by her sons Gordon (Cathy), Woody (Deb), Wilbur (Allison), and Raymond; grandchildren Mariah, Erik, Colin, Charles, Erin, and Randi; six great grand children, nieces Jeanie Parker and Beth Graber and a large extended family and many, many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents Abel and Mabel Graber; brother Gordon, and sister-in-law Frankie Virginia Graber, all of Salem.
She was a member of Jason Lee Methodist Church, Zenith Club, City of Salem Historical Landmarks Committee and Never missed a “Friends of the Library Book Sale.”
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Thursday, August 26, 2010 at Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service, 605 Commercial St. SE in Salem, Oregon.
Interment was at Mt. Crest Abbey Mausoleum in City View Cemetery.
