SALEM – Jack Prater Hill passed away on April 24, 1926. He was born in Council Bluffs, Iowa on June 24, 1926. He was raised in Grand Island, Nebraska. In 1944, he joined the United States Navy. He was in the battle Okinawa on the destroyer James C. Owens D.D.-776. He returned to Grand Island, Nebraska in 1947 to finish his high school education to receive his diploma. He graduated in 1948. Later that year he married Laura B. Mack and moved to Salem, Oregon. They were married for 54 years until her passing in May of 2002. In 1950, he started to work at the Oregon State Hospital for 36 ½ years and he retired as an Industrial Therapist. While working there he also joined the Army Reserve in 1951 and was posted in Salem, OR in the 929th Field Artillery which was part of the 104th Infantry Division named the Timberwolves. He left the Army reserve in 1955 as a Tech Sgt. In 1974 he was a paid extra in the Academy Award winner movie ”One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest”. He was a long term member of St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, the American Legion and VFW. In his younger years, his hobbies included fishing, camping and taking trips to the mid-west with his family. In his later years he enjoyed telling joke, life stories and singing. In 2004 he sang at the World War II National Memorial Dedication held at the Eagles Club in Salem, OR. He is survived by older brother Billy J. Hill of Salem. Sons; Danny M. Hill of Salem, Billy Ray Hill of Scio. Daughters; Kathy Haga of Turner, Lauri Whitman of Sweet Home, nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Visitation will be 3-8:00 PM on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, April 28, 29 and 30 at Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service. A funeral service is 2:00 PM on Saturday, May 1 at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church, 3295 Ladd Ave. NE. Arrangements by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
