SALEM- Hazel Isidor Swenson Enstad was born January 31, 1914 and died January 10, 2010 in Salem Oregon. Hazel was born on a family farm to Gilbert and Gertie Sabin Swenson, Hightower Township, Lamberton, Minnesota, descendants of Norwegian immigrants. She was oldest of five children, and was baptized, confirmed and married at Old Westbrook Lutheran Church, where she was active in Christian Education Department and a pianist for many years. In later years she was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Salem.
Hazel assumed much of the responsibility for raising her younger siblings after her mother’s early death. Hazel graduated from Storden High School in 1933, and later attended Lutheran Bible Institute in Minneapolis. Hazel married Melvin Christopher Enstad, and together they lived in Ann Township for 25 years, prior to Melvin’s death. Hazel enjoyed piano, gardening, knitting, reading and sewing. She moved to Capital Manor, in 1994, and enjoyed living in Oregon, making many new friends.
Hazel is survived by three children; John Enstad (Ruthe), Minnesota, Trudy Campbell (Daniel), Oregon and Philip Enstad (Elizabeth), Texas; 13 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild; one sister, Irene Otlmans and many nieces and nephews.
Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers and one sister.
The family would like to express their thanks for the loving care Hazel received at Capital Manor as well as Willamette Valley Hospice. A memorial service will be held at 2 pm Saturday, January 23, at Capital Manor Auditorium in West Salem. A reception will be held in the Capital Manor Community Center immediately following the service. Arrangements by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be sent to a favorite charity or the Red Cross.
