Salem – Frank Newell passed away on June 8, 2010. He was born in Alberta, Canada on Dec. 25, 1927 to George and Marie Newell. His parents were employed in Canada at that time and returned to the US when Frank was 10 years old. He was in the Navy from 1945 – 1947. After discharge from the Navy he returned to his job in Portland which was working on tugboats. With his skills and knowledge he became a captain and remained there until he retired in 1989.
Frank loved hunting, fishing, camping, playing cards and crossword puzzles. He was a member of the Silverton Elks for 41 years and a member of Kiwanis for a number of years and spent many hours volunteering time in his community. He was also a member of Court Street Christian Church for many years.
Frank is survived by his wife, Edyth; son Chuck DeGuire; daughters, Sharon DeGuire, Janet Dornhecker, Linda Gudmundsen, Suzanne Newell and 11 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. He is also survived by sister in laws; Marie Newell, Evelyn Nicholson, Lavonne (John) Morris and many nephews, nieces and friends. He was preceded in death by his father and mother, his brother Bob and sister Evelyn.
Donations may be made in Frank’s name to Court St Christian Church or Silverton Elks.
Visitation will be today from 12Noon – 4 pm at Virgil T. Golden Funeral Services.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Friday, June 11th at Court Street Christian Church. Private interment will be at Maplewood Pioneer Cemetery, Scotts Mills, Oregon. Arrangements are by Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.
