MT. ANGEL - Emmett P. Broughton Jr. (62), known by family and friends as ‘June’ died Saturday, February 6, 2010 at his home in Mt. Angel. Emmett fought a brave battle against lung, brain and bone cancer after being diagnosed ten weeks earlier.
Emmett was born in Bakersfield CA, April 13, 1947 to Reecie Driver and Emmett P. Broughton. The family lived the next eight years in Oklahoma and moved to this area in 1956 settling in Silverton. Emmett attended grade school in Scotts Mills and finished his schooling at Silverton High School. In 1966 Emmett was married to Sue Moran and moved to the Salem area where his three sons were born, Troy Vincent Broughton (Hawaii), Aaron Jason Broughton (Salem), and his eldest son Emmett Shawn Broughton who preceded him in death. Emmett moved back to the Silverton area in 1990.
Emmett’s forty plus years of work included United Disposal, private construction and maintenance at both Mt. Angel School District and Silverton Hospital. In his free time he enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, and camping with family and friends. Emmett always enjoyed a good story, joke, rum and coke, Hamms beer and a good laugh with friends and family. Just knowing the spirit in which he lived and the dignity in which he died we are forever grateful for having him in our lives.
Emmett married his best friend Denise McCarthy Ebner in 2005 and lived his last five years together at their home in Mt. Angel along with his dog ‘DOG’. Emmett’s only complaint was there was never enough time but so enjoyed the time they had together.
Other family includes grandchildren Jessie Broughton, Dana Fredrick, Michael Broughton, Derek Broughton, Alex Noel Broughton, Cody Broughton all of (Salem), sister and brother in law Barbara and Bob Fisher (Salem), and sisters Bobbie Duncan and Billie Gunderson both of which preceded him in death. Nephews Wayne Duncan (Salem), Darren Duncan (Redmond), Tim, Dan, Jeff, Dwight Fisher (Salem), Larry, Travis, Bradley Benning (Portland), nieces Lucretia Burkard (Bend), Cindy Duncan (Salem), Kathy and Tina Benning (Portland).
