Edith Cushman was born in Boise, Idaho. As a result of her father's and husband's careers, she spent the first half of her life moving from one town to the next. When she was 9 years old and living in The Dalles, Oregon, she met her soul mate, Robert Calkins. Eight years later, Bob and Edith married and she began her career as a military wife and mother. For 16 years, as the family moved from base to base, Edith quickly turned temporary accommodations into loving homes for Bob, their four children, and every other adult, child and adopted pet who crossed her threshold. When the family retired from military life in 1966 and moved to Salem, Oregon, she joyfully created the family's first permanent home. Edith did just about any craft but especially loved to bead, knit, crochet, and needle point. Her beautiful afghans are cherished and treasured by anyone lucky enough to receive one. The majority of Bob and Edith's last years together were spent traveling in their motor home visiting family and friends across the country. After Bob's death in 2002, Edith continued living in their yurt in Lyons, Oregon, where everyone was welcomed with a warm hug, a quick smile and, if needed, a strong shoulder. Edith's mother Mary Cushman, her children Pat, Eugene, Lena, Linda, Gary and Leroy, her nine grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren will miss mom’s caring touch and compassionate support. We love you Mom. Memorial services will begin at 11:00 am this Saturday, May 29th at Virgil T Golden Funeral Services.
