In loving memory

Danny L Swinney
April 22, 1954 - September 12, 2009

Salem – Dan was born on April 22, 1954, in Springfield, Missouri, the son of Leroy and Jaunita Swinney. Jaunita married Tab Rush in 1959 and Tab proudly raised Dan as his own. Tab’s Air Force career took Dan to many locations during his childhood including California, South Dakota, Ohio, Kentucky, Missouri, The Philippines, Georgia, Alaska, and New Mexico.

In July of 1974, Dan joined the Army and began a twenty-four year career as a proud soldier, with fifteen years in Air Defense and nine years in Military Intelligence. While in the Army, Dan was stationed at bases in Louisiana, Texas, Germany, Colorado, and Korea, with his retirement taking place at Fort Lewis, Washington. After retiring from the Army, Dan moved to Salem, Oregon, to begin a ten year career as Court Administrator for the City of Salem.

Dan was an avid fisherman, hunter, competitive shooter and an NRA life member. He was nearest to God when he was outdoors and enjoyed quiet times close to forest streams, lakes and the ocean. He was a fan of the Seattle Mariners, John Wayne movies, and books by Louis L’Amour. Dan was a history buff and with his remarkable memory, could dazzle everyone with names, dates, and places.

Dan will be remembered for his wonderful humor, his sense of decency, his ability to enthrall everyone with amazing stories, and his pride at being an American.

Dan is survived by his loving wife Carol; sons Devlin and Donavon of Salem; father Tab and Ella Rush of Summer Shade, Kentucky; brother Mark and Jeanne Rush of Herndon, Virginia; sister Nancy and Vern Grantham of Kennesaw, Georgia. Dan was preceded in death by his mother Jaunita.

Viewing will take place at Virgil T. Golden Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 15 from 3:00 – 7:00 pm. A Celebration of Life and Reception will take place at Virgil T. Golden Chapel on Wednesday, September 16, at 11:00 am.

Interment will take place at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon. Memorial contributions can be made to the Disabled American Veterans (www.day.org), the NRA Second Amendment Fund (www.nra.org), and Bat Conservation International (www.batcon.org).

“Though you have conquered Earth and chartered Sea
And planned the courses of all Stars that be,
Adventure on, more wonders are in Thee.”

We will miss you Dan; you were a true gentleman.
