In loving memory

Dale Raymond Skewis
April 16, 1921 - June 6, 2010

Salem – Dale Skewis was born April 16, 1921 at home in Ashton, Iowa to Raymond and Charlotte Skewis. Dale recently celebrated his 89th birthday with his identical twin brother Donald, surrounded by many family members. The twins and their older siblings, Mason and Shirley, were raised on the family farm in Sheldon, Iowa. In 1942 Dale and Don enlisted in the U.S. Navy with Dale returning from his overseas naval service following World War II. He married his beautiful bride, Darlene Wood on January 22, 1945. The newlyweds settled in Eugene, OR in 1946 where Dale attended the University of Oregon on the GI Bill, earning his B.A. and M.A. in Education. Dale and Darlene raised four children while Dale began his career as an educator; first as a teacher in Lorraine, OR, then as a principal and superintendent in Drain, OR. The family moved to Salem in 1957 where Dale worked for the Oregon State Dept. of Education until his retirement in 1984. Dale enjoyed bridge, square dancing, martinis, barbequing, and family camping trips; but most of all fishing! His favorite expressions were “Fish On” and “Dale feelin’ better now!” when he landed his first fish, as well as “Go Ducks!”. Dale is survived by his four children, daughters Dianne (Hal) Benham of Poway, CA, Shari (Malcolm) Eslinger of Lake Oswego, and Bonnie (John) Gruenebaum of Orem, UT; Son Steve (Kim) Skewis of Salem; 10 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, plus 5 step grandchildren. He is also survived by his twin brother, Don (Shirley) Skewis of Port Aransas, TX and many nieces and nephews. Dale’s love of life and unconditional love for his family has created memories that will live in our hearts forever. Memorial contributions can be made to the Salem Parkinson’s Foundation or Willamette Valley Hospice. Visiting from 1:00-2:00 pm and services at 2:00 pm on Saturday, June 12 at Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service in Salem. Reception to follow.
