Schaefer, Charlotte E (Roscoe), a resident of Salem for over 60 years, died November 5, 2009 at the age of 93. She was the wife of the late Jay V. Schaefer. Daughter of Charles D. and Edna M. Roscoe, she was born in Crawford, Nebraska, July 10, 1916. She earned a Registered Nursing degree at the Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Toledo, Ohio. She was a member of the Salvation Army Corps and upon the outbreak of WWII joined the US Army Nurses Corps. She served in the Pacific Theater (New Guinea, East Indies, Luzon, Manila) attaining the rank of 1st Lieutenant.
After the war ended, she returned to the States and settled in Salem where a sister and family were then living. She worked first as a registered nurse at the old Tuberculosis Hospital and later at the Salem General Hospital, from where she retired in 1979 after 18 years of service. Although raised in the Congregational Church in Nebraska, she accompanied her sister and family to services at Saint John Lutheran Church in Salem. She met her husband there, joined the Lutheran faith, and maintained membership in the St. John congregation until her death.
She leaves five children--George Schaefer (and Lois) of Randle, WA, Nancy Schaefer of Lubbock, TX, Kathleen Schaefer (and Shuguang Zhang) of Lexington, MA, William Schaefer (and Linda) of Salem, and Carolyn Leja of Salem; seven grandchildren--Michelle Schaefer of Randle, WA, Michael Schaefer of Ammon, ID, Montica (Schaefer) Johnson (and Kyle) of Spokane, WA, Lt. JG Matthew Schaefer (Kendra) of Springfield, OR, David Leja of Keizer, Spc. Dustin Leja (and Jackie) of Salem, and Niklas Zhang of Alexandria, VA; two sisters-in-law--Irena “Scotty” Schaefer of Salem, and Lorene Roscoe, of Chiloquin, OR; and many beloved nieces and nephews spread throughout the country.
Services will be held November 9, 2009 at St. John Lutheran Church, 1350 Court Street in Salem at 10:00 AM followed by an interment in Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Friends and relatives are kindly invited to attend.
